First Sunday Takes Place the First Sunday of the Month in Downtown Pittsboro

First Sunday takes place on the first Sunday of each month. All the retailers that are members of the Pittsboro Merchants Association along Hillsboro Street open their doors for business from noon to 4 p.m. Also, craftspeople and vendors set up shop on the sidewalks, and live music is performed April through November.
The event, now in its fifth year, has grown in popularity over time.
“It is definitely getting better attended,” said coordinator Leslie Fesperman. “If you do an event over and over, you get better at it and also more people hear about it and become more involved in it.”
She is pleased that there appears to be more community involvement recently.
At a recent event, CORA hosted an Empty Bowl Program selling handcrafted bowls from local artists. Customers could buy the bowls with soup from Chatham Marketplace.
Although Fesperman is closing her Fusions shop on Hillsboro Street, she plans to continue as coordinator of First Sunday.
She said it should continue to do well.
“I think people come to the event knowing that they can buy some nice handmade things and talk to the people who make the product,” she said. “They can support the local businesses in our community.”

History of Pittsboro, NC

Pittsboro was established as a town in 1785; the Chatham County Court House stood on land belonging to Miles Scurlock. In 1787, however, the legislature declared that a town could not be established on Scurlock's land. The town's trustees instead purchased adjacent land belonging to William Petty and laid out the town. That same year, Pittsboro was officially named the county seat. Although Chatham County is named for William Pitt, 1st Earl of Chatham, Pittsboro is named for his son, William Pitt the Younger.

Pittsboro was once considered as a potential site for both the University of North Carolina and the state capitol. UNC was eventually sited in Chapel Hill and the state capitol was located approximately 30 miles to the east of Pittsboro, in Raleigh
